The Power of Color

#TipTuesday and I’m feeling gooooood!

I’m thinking I need to work on a theme song for these days and attach it to the blog. I must be feeling so vibrant after checking out all kinds of color schemes, patterns, and combos in preparation for today’s tip. Did you know black is the only color that doesn’t put off any energy?

Color is a living energy.

Think about it, have you ever walked into an empty room and suddenly felt energized or flat? Without even noticing it, you have been effected by the other energy in the room; color. Color is a living energy.

Picking out an outfit to help your mood is not a daunting task, as outfits can be easily changed. However, when it comes to designing your living space, it is important to understand your own energy, and exactly which colors effect you, and how.

Now, everyone is different, and color psychology is very individualized. Red evokes a sense of energy and power within my mom, whereas for my father-in-law, it depicts anger and an association of second place.

Spend some time in front of the paint swatches at Lowe’s and take heed of your reactions to colors. Some colors may not stir anything inside you, move past these. Focus on the colors that evoke the strongest reactions. Hone in on one color and merge that color with your consciousness, does it bring up a memory? A smell? A texture or sensation? Taste? Sound?

Move through this and take note of your experiences with different colors, and all their shades.

Hone in on one color, and merge that color with your consciousness.

With this new sense of awareness, you will know if painting the living room wall blue will help instill calmness and peace after a hectic work day, or if it will flatten and exhaust an already calm demeanor.

Patterns also play an effect on your energy. For some a busy pattern is energizing, while anxiety inducing in others. Flowers are often soothing and calming, while others might simply hate floral patterns. Again, focus on your experiences with particular patterns. When it comes to mixing patterns, do my favorite “sit in the store aisle and match things up until you like it.”

Once there is an awareness of color, one of the simplest statements to make can be found in an area rug. Use it to tie a room together and be a home for all colors used, or use it as the only pop of color.

Rugs can be especially helpful when in situations where paintings walls or cabinets may not be possible, such as rental situations. When faced with bare walls and ugly floors, rely on vibrant paintings and decor. Nick-nacks are great on shelves and tables (read A Guide for the Decor Shopaholic: Productive Binging for how to place nick-nacks), where pillows and furniture also allow some room to get crazy and make a huge statement without even touching paint.

Getting away from paint means a lot of freedom in cushions and nick nacks. Get as colorful as you want here, remembering things don’t have to match, as long as you still enjoy the way they look, and are avoiding colors and patterns which emit negative energy or toxicity to you.

The Power of Color, By Cynthia Blanche, says “When deciding on your color scheme, it is important to take into account the size of the room, how much light it gets, your own personal likes and dislikes, whether you prefer warm or cool colors, and in what situation you favor these colors” the colors you favor in the bedroom may be different than those in the kitchen.

“Not liking” your decor or color scheme can usually be a much deeper conflict of energy causing toxicity and negativity in your life.

Focus on you.

Take time to acknowledge the way you feel, and what makes your world spin in the most productive way (I know, I know, I cringe every time I think about taking a “good hard look” at myself).

Eliminate distractions, eliminate toxins.

To reach our full potential, we must be constantly tapping into the way we feel about everything, adjusting where necessary,  and charging forward with the deepest sense of peace, passion, drive, confidence, and faith. Eliminate distractions, eliminate toxins, and you will be amazed at the life you create.
